چکیده

Combinatorial methods (or methods of elementary transformations) came to group theory from low-dimensional topology in the beginning of the century. Soon after that, combinatorial group theory became an independent area with its own powerful techniques. On the other hand, combinatorial commutative algebra emerged in the sixties, after Buchberger introduced what is now known as Gröbner bases. The purpose of this survey is to show how ideas from one of those areas contribute to the other.

A primer of Hopf algebras

In this paper, we review a number of basic results about so-called Hopf algebras. We begin by giving a historical account of the results obtained in the 1930's and 1940's about the topology of Lie groups and compact symmetric spaces. The climax is provided by the structure theorems due to Hopf, Samelson, Leray and Borel. The main part of this paper is a thorough analysis of the relations betwee...

Representations of rank two affine Hecke algebras

This paper classifies and constructs explicitly all the irreducible representations of affine Hecke algebras of rank two root systems. The methods used to obtain this classification are primarily combinatorial and are, for the most part, an application of the methods used in [Ra1]. I have made special effort to describe how the classification here relates to the classifications by Langlands par...

On non-standard graded algebras

Positively graded algebras are fairly natural objects which are arduous to be studied. In this article we query quotients of non-standard graded polynomial rings with combinatorial and commutative algebra methods.

Combinatorial Problems about Free Groups and Algebras

This is a survey of recent progress in several areas of combinatorial algebra. We consider combinatorial problems about free groups, polynomial algebras, free associative and Lie algebras. Our main idea is to study automorphisms and, more generally, homomorphisms of various algebraic systems by means of their action on \very small" sets of elements, as opposed to a traditional approach of study...
